"This is my 5 to 9 after my 9 to 5; capturing moments and documenting my life on old-school film. It changes my sense of time, which enables me to really connect with the subject, whether it's a person, an animal, an inanimate object, or even a place. There is also a specific beauty to the colour palette which I think is difficult to reproduce using digital photography, not to mention the tactile process of loading film, carefully composing my shots, and eagerly waiting to see the developed images which fosters mindfulness, patience, a sense of anticipation, and craftsmanship. Additionally, the limitations of film, such as having a finite number of exposures and lack of instant feedback actually encourages me to slow down in today's fast-paced world where instant gratification is often the norm, to just focus on the moment, and truly hone my skills as I progress. This makes analogue photography not just a hobby to me, but a meditative and deeply rewarding artistic pursuit." - Xue

"Much of my photographic practice centres around documenting my two children. Together with my husband, we made a decision early on to give our children the gift of world travel, recognising its potential to broaden their perspectives and enhance their global awareness. The sacrifices required to fulfil this aspiration are unquestionably worth it to us. Vowing to seize as many opportunities we can, we will continue to explore the world, enriching our lives and making memories along the journey.
I find myself shooting almost solely on film these days. I enjoy the tangibility of the process, and it allows me to stay more present, more in the moment, with my children, whilst making pictures with them." - Natalie

"I founded @ourstoriesonfilm 2021, a community for female & non-binary film photographers to share their love of film photography in a safe and inclusive space. What started as a passion project has now become a platform for connecting with and elevating the works of other female & non-binary film photographers.
Hello from Australia! I'm Joey Chan, photographer and curator based in Melbourne. Since young, I have been fascinated by the way a photograph can freeze reality. They can transport people back in time and re-experience a moment. I wanted this superpower: the ability to make people feel what I felt in a moment. I gravitate towards those brief moments of reality that remind me of movie scenes, finding beauty in the everyday and highlighting places, people and things that might often be overlooked. There was an abundance of these moments while I was travelling in Japan, especially while in transit from one destination to another, where the colours of the train and boat cabins were louder than the people in them.
We have published two volumes of our community zine, hosted a group exhibition featuring 25 artists, and soon to release the topic for volume 3. I'm incredibly proud to present 6 Australian female film photographers for you to get to know their work, creative practice and their love of film." - Joey

"As we tend to observe an increase of neutral and grey tones in everyday life, whether it is architecture, interior design or fashion, film photography allows me to capture places, scenes and details with colorful and warm tones." - Aurore
